Most Israelis hoping for Trump’s victory
A poll by Israel’s Channel 12 news shows that Israelis massively favor Trump over Harris as the next US president.
Dan Perry, former chairman of the Foreign Press Association in Jerusalem, said that is because many Israelis believe Trump would simply be “in favor of anything the country does”.
However, Perry said Israelis “may be in for a surprise because Trump is very capricious”, estimating he would be more likely than Harris to push for a quick end to the genocide in Gaza.
“I think he [Trump] will care less about the means in which it is achieved, but the idea of putting up with a forever war while Trump himself is on record as hating the notion of forever wars, I think stands on shaky ground,” Perry told Al Jazeera.
“Trump’s impatience … and inclination to show he is wielding power might in fact work against Israel,” Perry added. “But, of course, in fact it might not. It’s definitely true that Trump is not going to care about what is happening on the ground.”
Trump, who moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognised Israeli sovereignty over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in Syria when he was president, has called himself “the best president in the history of Israel”.
