US election live

Voters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia will cast ballots in the presidential contest between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. Presidents are elected using the Electoral College, which allocates votes to each state based on the number of House and Senate members who represent the state in Congress. A candidate needs at least 270 Electoral College votes to be elected president. Most states allocate all of their Electoral College votes to the winner of the state’s popular vote.

Nebraska and Maine both allocate two of their Electoral College votes to the winner of the statewide popular vote and then one to the winner in each congressional district. Trump’s pitch to voters has focused on the economy, immigration and crime. Harris, since taking over as the Democratic standard-bearer after President Joe Biden dropped out, has argued she would usher in a new era and has campaigned on improving the care economy, protecting abortion rights, and guarding democracy.
